Beauty Routines

I used to laugh when my friend Roberta would tell me that her beauty routine consisted of using up all the products scattered around her bathroom that her daughters had rejected.  My own lovely daughter left last week for California with most of the contents of our bathroom stuffed in her carry on.  (The girl snorts in the face of TSA regulations.)
So this week I'm sporting the au naturel look.  'Fluffy' air dried locks.  A temporary truce with body hair.  A devil-may-care attitude toward fresh breath and under-eye circles.  I've managed to deodorize with a bracing nub of surf 'n musk retrieved from the bottom of my husband's drawer, but God help me if I sprout a rogue eyebrow...I believe she took 3 pairs of tweezers with her.
I can't really complain though, she left me with plenty of rejects, many of them more than half full.

And over the years I've managed to discover a few gems among the discards.

For instance, the super cheap Stridex pads, made for acne, work as well on my skin (pores, fine lines and wrinkles) as the fancy anti-aging products ever did.  I've used the sensitive skin pads for almost a year now and I'm as happy with my skin as I was when I was using the expensive prescription Renova.  They don't have any alcohol in them so they're not drying, and the salicylic acid exfoliates really well.  And, it costs like $4 or something crazy like that.  The best thing is I'm no longer tempted to go back to the dermatologist for Renova.

So I guess there is a silver lining to 'sharing' beauty products with daughters.  I do wish my youngest would come home soon, though. I'm going to need one of those hairbrushes...eventually.

Are there any unexpected 'finds' in your beauty routine?

  1. The one thing I love is Aquaphor, which you can only get in the US, so I'm always buying it in bulk or tracking it down on Ebay.

  4. I think I may have had less products in my entire college dorm than that collection.

I have to agree, Stridex Sensitive is the best. I use it after my workout routine to keep my face from braking out. I also absolutely love Neutrogina sunscreen because it doesn't clog my pores and it isn't as horribly shiny as other sunscreens. I even got my boyfriend using it.
