Ode to tomatoes

on
the table, at the midpoint
of summer,
the tomato
displays
its convolutions,
its canals,
its remarkable amplitude
and abundance,
no pit,
no husk,
no leaves or thorns,
the tomato offers
its gift
of fiery color
and cool completeness.
---Pablo Neruda (from Ode to Tomatoes)

  1. Sue,

Your photography is stunning! I love every one! And the poetry could not be more fitting! However did you find that? I'm on my way over for lunch...ha.

  2. I really enjoyed this post. The colors alone are a feast for the eyes. You know, of course, that you've made it necessary for me to cut a great slice of a Brandywine to make a tomato sandwich for lunch today :-). I hope you enjoy the remainder of the weekend. Blessings...Mary

  3. Oh, so tempting! My summer tomatoes are already finished. I can hardly wait to start our fall planting in just a few more weeks. I never did try a green tomato and I feel like I completely missed out!

  4. What beautiful tomatoes! Did you grow them yourself or did you get them at that farm place?

  5. If you still have some peaches you could make a lovely peach and tomoato salad. We have been having them sliced and layered with some fresh basil and balsamic....even with a bit of goat cheese. Just lovely.
Summer tomatos are the best. Looks wonderful!

  7. Your photography is outstanding. I adore tomatoes, especially heirlooms this time of the year. I think I could eat tomatoes everyday of my life. Your little bites would be an entire meal for me.
