Fall style 101

I was really looking forward to picking up a few fashion tips on our trip back to college this weekend. With so many students swarming the campus at the first flush of fall, I figured I'd get a sneak peak at some of the season's best new trends; maybe some chunky cable knits, luscious leather boots, beautiful oversized scarves and some fun new ways to put it all together. So many of the most important innovations of style get their start from the creative ways that young people mix and match their wardrobes. With the backdrop of a classic New England college campus I was guessing it would feel a bit like being in the middle of a fall fashion shoot. I'm poised to take notes.
Here's a few highlights from what I've been able to pick up so far...judging from what the students were wearing,  these would be considered  essentials for Fall '11...
In all fairness, it really is still summer here.  The goldenrod is out in force, the air is filled with the sounds of crickets, you really have to hunt to find any yellow or red in the foliage, and it's pretty darn warm.
Maybe if I come back at Thanksgiving break.

  1. I have noticed the around the neck key fobs on more and more folks as school starts back up. Our local college and highschool now use them to hang the student id's from.

  2. bwahahahaha, I just might have snorted when I read this list. College attire is not even remotely what I would consider for a potential wardrobe upgrade. Possibly for pajamas, but that's about it.

In all fairness, I live in the desert and the clothing pictured above is worn almost year round. I just might die in a cable knit sweater.

  3. It will be fun to see what they are wearing come parent's weekend. The campus of your daughter's school is beautiful. I loved it.My girls chose Yale and MIT. Scenic they were not :-). I hope you enjoy the long weekend. Blessings...Mary

  4. Jackie---my daughter was thrilled to hear that her new dorm has a code system instead of keys, so she can't lose hers this year!

  5. Mary (Barefeet in the kitchen)---I used to live in Los Angeles, also the desert, and this was my LEAST favorite season. I was always trying to wear cozy sweaters and Ugg boots, and I was in a perpetual sweat!

  6. Mary---I forgot about Parent's Weekend, good point. I took a last walk around the campus yesterday, and even with all the inevitable construction that goes on on campuses these days, it really is stunning. Like a world apart. I think all campuses have that feel, even the slightly less scenic ones! What good choices your girls made!

  7. Hi Sue, so glad you found my blog as I have now found yours! I'm laughing at the college attire - looks the same as my girls high school wardrobe. I'll be sending my oldest off to college in a couple of years - gulp!
