Around here it'll be a day of old favorites. Foods that we can make in our sleep. Food that's fast and simple so we can focus on the important stuff, like shopping.
Normally I don't subject myself to the craziness of Black Friday, but my daughter wants to go. Her one street college town has very few shops...the campus co-op, an overpriced drug store, North Face, and a clothing boutique where inexplicably every single item carries a three digit price tag.
And anyway this year it really seems like the patriotic thing to do.
We're starting with warm Pumpkin Streusel Muffins, supersized in the jumbo tins to fuel us through the mall and beyond. (Just bake the muffins for 5 minutes longer in the 6 large tins.)
Rather than resort to mall grub we'll make a pit stop at home for a quick bowl of soup. I used what was around the kitchen, chopped up some onion, shallot, garlic, fennel, fingerling potatoes, butternut squash, a few cremini mushrooms, and the last carrot in the bag. I threw them in the pot with olive oil, and after they sizzled for several minutes I threw in a can of fire roasted tomatoes, a quart of chicken broth, a couple of bay leaves and 1/3 cup of yellow lentils. After about 20 or 30 minutes simmering on the stove, we're ready to eat. I always grate cheese on top of vegetable soups, I just grabbed the first nub I found in the cheese drawer...Gruyere.
We'll be exhausted by dinner. We'll grill some extra sharp Vermont cheddar with ham on New York rye.
Don't forget about the Williams Sonoma giveaway this week,
just become a follower to enter...details top right.
I'm loving that vegetable soup. It looks so light after yesterday's eating frenzy (at least for me). Funny, I mentioned black Friday in my post too, but no, I will be avoiding it, with the exception of a little consignment shop that I love in the next town. I might have to pop in there for a 50% off sale ;)
ReplyDeleteI am always stunned by the beauty of your photographs!
ReplyDeleteWe celebrated Thanksgiving yesterday even though it is sadly not a holiday for us. Today is a normal work/school day! I actually have to a Ball tonight with my husband, a work thing. I'd rather stay home and eat leftovers!
I hope your shopping goes well!
I avoid stepping food much farther than my own yard on Black Friday. I really don't like the craziness and the (unnecessary) rudeness & madness I've encountered in the past. However, making a day of all of this delicious food is definitely appealing :D
ReplyDelete...and by "stepping food", I meant "stepping foot". Sheesh. It's like I can't think of anything else ;P
ReplyDeleteWouldn't dream of shopping today. My goal for today is to get every last thing put back where it belongs and spend some quality time reading the Steve Jobs bio. Tomorrow I'm going to hit up a couple of small businesses before we go to a wedding.
ReplyDeletemmmm sounds like the perfect grub for braving the crowds!! i think that some retailers are trying to kick start spending this weekend...but it is nowhere near Black Friday (which totally has the tone of doom I think)...I hate crowds but I would come along just to enjoy the food breaks! Have fun with your daughter x I am counting down the days till my mom comes to stay for Xmas!!! xx
ReplyDeleteI just love your photos!!!! I want to eat the screen!! Lovely post :)
ReplyDeleteGood to see that you are still making food even when you are rushing to the sales. We don't 'do' Black Friday because we don't 'do' Thanksgiving. It's not a holiday for us in the UK! I guess we just have to be thankful all the time lol!
ReplyDeleteALL looks delicious!
ReplyDeleteNo way did I wander anywhere near the mall today. Not Sat or Sun either. I lack courage. But your muffins and soup might have been incentive to join you and your daughter!
ReplyDeleteNo idea what Black Friday is but would love to make the pitstops at your house for shopping refuelling. Lovely simple food always looks amazing as your great photos show.
ReplyDeleteThese would be a few of my favourite things too!!!!
ReplyDeleteI admire your courage in venturing to the mall on Black Friday. It's good to see you had some wonderful food to fortify you for the journey :-). I love the muffins and have bookmarked the recipe as a must try. I hope you had a wonderful holiday and can enjoy the long weekend. Blessings...Mary
ReplyDeleteoooooh! I missed those sandwiches the first time. They are mouthwatering!
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh...that sandwich looks heavenly...I'll have that today and then I'll make miso soup! Your photos are amazing!!!
