The winter farmer's markets aren't as convenient, we have to drive at least 1/2 hour to get to one, and I wondered if it was going to be worth the trouble as we jumped into a cold car and wended our way through a grey landscape last Sunday.
What we found was a high school gym transformed into a warm, festive, circling of the wagons kind of atmosphere. Besides all the regular farmer's market kind of stuff there were handmade sausages roasting on a grill, micro-brewed beer, local wines, and fruitcakes mixed in We picked up a few colorful winter vegetables to brighten our kitchen---
Romanesco Broccoli
Watermelon Radishes
Baby Golden Turnips
The turnips got roasted with a chicken the first night, and then made into a soup the next day.
The other two are awaiting their fate. Maybe an exotic winter vegetable crudite platter.
Aren't these gorgeous?
ReplyDeleteI love those vegetables and your soup looks yummy.
I need to have my breakfast now and I'd love to be sipping your soup instead of my cereal.
So beautiful! I love the alienness of Romanesco Broccoli. And that last photo seriously makes me feel all warm and sunny just looking at it...the golden tone is so welcoming :D
ReplyDeleteThose radishes look almost too good to eat. The broccoli reminds me of small spirals of cauliflower.. they are the same species, I think. Lovely photos!
ReplyDeleteLovely colours!

ReplyDeleteBoy are we on the same page! You are one step ahead of me. I made a recipe with my watermelon radish from a farmers market trip and am in the process of writing it up. Aren't winter farmers' markets the best?
