Dark Chocolate Chip Pomegranate Pound Cake (and other recent flops and failures in the kitchen)

Lest you think I've been avoiding you, I want to assure you that I've been busy in the kitchen, just not in a very productive way.  This was an experimental cake.  I really love the combination of dark chocolate and citrus, especially lemon, so I decided to find out what dark chocolate and pomegranate would be like.  This cake has a wonderful moist crumb, and the slightly bitter dark chocolate plays against the berry tones of the pomegranate in an interesting way.  That's the key word, interesting.  Not actually delicious.  Kind of weird.  Like the pomegranate curd I made that turned out a brownish taupe because of the mixing of the purple pomegranate and the yellow egg yolks.  Who knew?

You can see I persisted in photographing this cake anyway, I so wanted it to be good!

But at least you know I won't try to pull any fast ones on you.  Like this morning's Carrot Oatmeal Streusel Coffee Cake.  Sounds great, huh?  Yeah, well, not so much.

And this Beef and Brussels Sprout stew.

Or this Pumpkin Ravioli with Browned Butter and Sage.

Sorry, none of it was good enough to post, but don't worry, I'll be back asap with something worth your time.
Have a great weekend---I plan to spend the day far, far, away from the kitchen!   :)

  1. I was sort of wondering what you've been up to and figured you were busy with your kids back at home or just life...ahhh, kitchen fails. Or not fails, but not super amazing successes. Omg I have my share. Sometimes I try to adapt an amazing looking recipe only to find myself with nothing!! at all with what the intended recipe looked like and then want to kick myself for just not following the recipe. Or, I follow the recipe to the T, and end up with a fail, which is the worst! Or I try something totally out there and end up with...meh results.

Well your food LOOK!!! awesome. The cake glaze, the puppy dog cupcakes are too cute! And carrot cake and pumpkin rav...so sorry they didnt pan out but they look delish!

  2. Oh no! Shame those didn't work out, because they all do sound really good. Carrot coffee cake sounds awesome! Those are some clever ideas, but yes it's good to know that at least you don't post sub-par things. :)

  4. It's always a bit disappointing to go with an interesting idea that turns out not quite what you expected.. I imagine a lot of us have gone though similar weeks. On the bright side, your photos are lovely as always. :)

  5. I love that you tell us there are fails! Besides keeping you human (not that I was doubting it for a second), it makes me feel less dumb for some of the more "interesting" but disgusting things I sometimes concoct!!
    Thank you.

  6. Sue, it really sucks that you are such a great photographer. Because everything here LOOKS fantastic! The idea that none of those gorgeous photos amounted to a blog worthy post is just so wrong. I hope you are eating out and enjoying fabulous food without a camera in sight tonight!

Have a blessed weekend and I'll be sending you LOTS of great kitchen vibes for next week.

  7. And for what it is worth, I am giggling imagining that someone is probably pinning these for the fabulous pictures and not even scrolling down to realize that there are no recipes attached!

  8. When things are quiet on the blog it means I have had more than my share of kitchen fails.I am sure we are in good company. Not everything looks and tastes as we imagine. The pumpkin ravioli especially looks delicious.

  14. Well they all look pretty great to me! Flops in the kitchen? All the time. I hate coming away with nothing after days spent trying to make something. All these photos are terrific and they made for a nice post! Here's to great kitchen successes!

  15. HA! and haven't we all had those moments where we're so excited to make something, or we've created this whole big thing in our heads for a recipe and then....hmmm. :) "Interesting" is the word most often used by Mr. Table when i make him taste something i've deemed a "maybe" blog post; if he says "interesting," i know it's not going to see the light of day. I feel you, girl! Thank goodness we always learn from our mistakes/interesting results.

  16. Wow, you would never be able to tell from the photos that any of this isn't perfectly delicious. Thanks for posting these anyhow. It's good to show that even spectacular cooks can have "kitchen nightmares" sometimes.

    Love your blog and photos!
